This coin belongs to Mexico's long-running series celebrating the country's 31 states plus the Federal District, with each issue pairing gold and fine silver in a format the Casa de Moneda introduced in the early 2000s to target the high-end collector market. Baja California Sur holds the distinction of being Mexico's second-youngest state, having achieved statehood only in 1974 — the last territory to make that transition before the Federal District question resurfaced decades later.
The gold centres on this series were struck separately and pressed into the silver ring, a process that occasionally produced minor fitting inconsistencies across the run.
