Colombia issued this gold piece specifically for the 6th Pan American Games, held in Cali in July and August of 1971 — the first time the Games had been hosted by a South American nation. Cali's selection was itself contested; the city had originally been awarded the 1959 Games but lacked the infrastructure, forcing a postponement that took over a decade to resolve.
The Casa de Moneda de Bogotá struck commemorative gold across several denominations for the event. Circulation was negligible — these were sold directly to collectors and foreign visitors rather than released into commerce.
