Reverse description A centrally positioned Frailejón plant (Espeletia grandiflora) dominates the field, depicted in fine engraved detail with its characteristic elongated leaves radiating outward from a stout, woolly trunk, and small daisy-like flowers visible among the foliage. Radiating lines in the lower field suggest the high-altitude páramo landscape in which the plant is endemic. The common name 'FRAILEJÓN' is inscribed along the upper left, with the scientific name 'ESPELETIA GRANDIFLORA' in smaller lettering below it. The design is enclosed by a raised bead border consistent with the obverse.

Additional information

Colombia's Banco de la República shifted this denomination to brass-plated steel as part of a broader cost-reduction effort after rising metal prices made the earlier compositions increasingly uneconomical to strike. The move mirrored decisions made across Latin America during the same period, as mints struggled to keep face value above intrinsic metal value on smaller circulating coins.

KM#296 replaced a thicker, heavier predecessor and has since become one of the most actively circulated coins in the Colombian monetary system — longevity reflected in how quickly examples from the early dates in this series accumulate contact marks.
