100 Pesos

Río Negro's provincial quasi-currency program of the mid-1990s was a direct response to the fiscal squeeze imposed by Convertibility. With the peso pegged one-to-one to the dollar and provincial governments denied the ability to run deficits freely, several Argentine provinces began issuing their own debt instruments — technically bonds, functionally cash. These circulated alongside the national peso in local commerce, accepted by provincial employees and traders who had little choice.

Casa de Moneda's involvement gave the notes a veneer of official legitimacy that many similar provincial instruments lacked. Río Negro's series was among the more formally produced of the provincial bond issues.
