The P#68 series was printed in-house by Banco de México at its own printing plant — one of the earlier Latin American central banks to bring note production fully under state control rather than contracting to the major European or North American security printers. By the late 1970s, Mexico's money supply was under severe pressure: peso depreciation following the 1976 devaluation had badly eroded public confidence, and 100-peso notes from this period circulated hard and fast, turning up worn well before their expected withdrawal.
The watermark security on this series is relatively rudimentary by contemporary standards, reflecting the limitations of domestic production at the time.
