The Tesoro Nacional de Nicaragua occupied an awkward position in the country's monetary history — it was a government treasury operation issuing fiduciary paper at a time when Nicaragua lacked a functioning central bank, leaving the notes formally backed by little more than political will. The American Bank Note Company handled most of Central America's prestige printing at this period, and the Nicaraguan account was no exception.
By 1912, U.S. Marines had landed and American financial advisors were restructuring Nicaraguan public finances entirely. Notes issued in 1910 had a short window before the monetary reorganization that followed effectively rendered the Tesoro Nacional's instruments obsolete.
