Banco Nacional was one of several private Colombian banks of issue operating under the banking law of 1880, which granted concessions to issue notes redeemable in specie. By 1899, however, the institution was already under severe pressure — the Thousand Days War broke out that same year, and the inflationary emission policies that followed effectively ended the era of privately issued Colombian banknotes within a few years.
The American Bank Note Company printed this series in New York, as was standard practice for Colombian banks of the period that could afford ABNC's contracts. Whether significant quantities actually circulated before the war disrupted normal commerce is an open question — survivors at any grade are genuinely scarce.
