The Banco Hipotecario de la Provincia de Buenos Aires was a mortgage lending institution, not a commercial bank, and its note-issuing activity in 1891 falls squarely within one of Argentina's most severe financial crises — the Baring Crisis, which had broken the previous year and triggered bank runs, currency chaos, and the collapse of several Buenos Aires institutions. That this bank was still printing 100-peso notes at Talleres del Banco de la Plata during that period says something about the province's determination to keep mortgage credit functioning when federal monetary authority had effectively disintegrated.
Printed in La Plata, the provincial capital founded only a decade earlier, the note was produced entirely within Argentine infrastructure — unusual for the period, when foreign printers dominated.
