El Banco Español de la Habana was founded in 1856 as the sole authorized bank of issue in Cuba under Spanish colonial administration — a monopoly it jealously defended against any rival institution for decades. The National Bank Note Company, before its 1879 merger into the American Bank Note Company, printed for a considerable range of Latin American and Caribbean clients, and this note is among the more substantial denominations in that relationship.

The "186x" dating indicates the year's final digit was completed by hand at issue, placing it somewhere in the 1860s — a decade when Cuba's colonial economy was under severe strain from the tensions that would eventually erupt in the Ten Years' War beginning in 1868.
