El Banco Español de la Habana was the only bank of issue in Cuba during the late colonial period, and its notes circulated in an economy still built on sugar and enslaved labor. The 1867–1868 issue preceded the outbreak of the Ten Years' War by only months — a conflict that would collapse the island's financial stability and drive most of these higher denominations out of active circulation almost immediately after release.

American Bank Note Company handled the work from their New York facilities, and at this denomination the note would have moved primarily between merchants and planters rather than through ordinary retail trade.
