Obverse description Three-quarter right-facing effigy of Fray Junípero Serra, depicted in his Franciscan habit with a draped cowl, rendered in high relief against a flat field. The portrait captures the friar's distinctive features with careful attention to the folds of his religious vestments. The circular legend around the periphery reads IVAN CARLOS I REY DE ESPAÑA, separated by dot stops, with the date 1990 positioned at the base of the design, also flanked by dot stops.
