By 1998, the peseta was living on borrowed time. Spain had committed to eurozone entry on January 1, 1999, fixing the peseta irrevocably at 166.386 to the euro — a rate set that day and never adjusted. These final peseta issues were struck knowing the currency had an expiration date, yet the mint continued production through 2000 to meet circulation demand. Spanish pesetas remained legal tender until February 28, 2002, after which redemption passed exclusively to the Bank of Spain, where it remains open indefinitely.
