The Alhucemas name refers to the 1925 Spanish-French amphibious landing at Al Hoceima on the Moroccan Rif coast — often cited as the first large-scale combined-arms amphibious operation in modern military history — mounted to break Abd el-Krim's Riffian Republic, which had humiliated Spanish forces at Annual in 1921, killing an estimated 8,000 soldiers.
