Macau's lunar series was issued under the Monetary Authority during a transitional period — the territory had reverted to Chinese sovereignty in December 1999, just over a year before this piece was struck. The series continued largely uninterrupted through the handover, one of the quieter signals that Macau's "one country, two systems" arrangement would preserve its distinct monetary identity in practice, not just on paper.
