Beschrijving voorzijde Central depiction of the ornate Baroque facade of the Ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral, Macau's most celebrated landmark, rendered in fine detail with arched niches, pilasters, and decorative finials. The legend 'MACAU' arcs across the upper field in large serif capitals, flanked on each side by a ring of five-pointed stars arranged along the inner border. The date '1996' appears in the lower exergue beneath the architectural motif, with a reeded border encircling the entire design.

Aanvullende informatie

Macau issued this coin just three years before the 1999 handover to the People's Republic of China, a period during which the Portuguese administration accelerated its commemorative program — partly to generate revenue, partly to cement a numismatic record of the territory's four-century Lusophone history. The lunar series had been running since the late 1980s and was aimed squarely at the collector export market across Southeast Asia.

KM#79 was struck by the Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda in Lisbon, not in Macau itself.
