Macau issued this coin just three years before the 1999 handover to the People's Republic of China, a period during which the Portuguese administration accelerated its commemorative program — partly to generate revenue, partly to cement a numismatic record of the territory's four-century Lusophone history. The lunar series had been running since the late 1980s and was aimed squarely at the collector export market across Southeast Asia.
KM#79 was struck by the Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda in Lisbon, not in Macau itself.
