Bradbury Wilkinson printed extensively for Portuguese colonial and overseas territories through the mid-twentieth century, but by the time this series was commissioned, Macao's political status had shifted considerably — Portugal had formally recognized the territory's Chinese character in 1976, a direct consequence of the Carnation Revolution. The Banco Nacional Ultramarino remained the note-issuing authority despite that shift, a banking arrangement that outlasted the colonial framework it had been built around.
Bradbury Wilkinson was absorbed into De La Rue in 1990, the same year the firm ceased independent operations. This series sits among the final Macanese issues they produced.
