Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was crowned the fifth Druk Gyalpo on November 1, 2008, becoming the world's youngest head of state at 28. The coronation had been delayed nearly two years after his father Jigme Singye Wangchuck abdicated in December 2006 — an abdication that itself was largely unprecedented in Bhutanese royal history. The Royal Monetary Authority issued this piece specifically to coincide with the coronation ceremonies in Thimphu's Changlimithang stadium.
Bhutan held its first parliamentary elections just months before the coronation, in March 2008, making this coin a marker of an unusually compressed political transition — from absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy and a new king, within a single calendar year.
