The 2005 issue marked Turkey's redenomination from the old Turkish Lira, which had deteriorated to one of the lowest-valued currencies in the world — by 2004, one US dollar bought roughly 1.35 million lira. The "New" prefix was officially a transitional measure, intended to last only until public confidence in the reformed currency was established; it was quietly dropped in 2009 when the series was redesigned and reissued simply as "Türk Lirası."
The redenomination removed six zeros in a single step, the most dramatic such adjustment in Turkish monetary history.
