正面描述 Cast copper cash coin with a central square hole flanked by four large Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion around the perforation. Reading clockwise from the top: 當 (top), 通 (right), 平 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the legend 當百通寶平 — conventionally read as 常通寶平 — denoting the coin's status as a standard circulating piece. The characters are rendered in bold, slightly recessed relief within a wide flat rim, typical of Joseon cast coinage. The flat inner field surrounding the square hole is clearly delineated, and the outer rim is raised and well-defined.

附加信息

Issued to fund the reconstruction of Gyeongbokgung Palace, ordered by the Heungseon Daewongun following its destruction during the Imjin War some two and a half centuries earlier, this coin was an emergency fiscal measure rather than a routine monetary issue. The face value of 100 mun — grossly inflated relative to the standard one-mun cash coins already in circulation — triggered immediate economic disruption. Merchants refused it at face value, the public hoarded conventional coinage, and rampant inflation followed within months. Production was halted by 1867, less than a year after striking began.
