The Banco Nacional do Brazil was one of several institutions granted sweeping emission rights under the Encilhamento — the speculative financial frenzy that followed the proclamation of the Brazilian Republic in 1889. The overprint on existing American Bank Note Company stock was a practical shortcut: rather than commission entirely new plates, the bank simply applied its own authorization over sheets already printed for the predecessor Banco Nacional, designation A247.
That improvised arrangement lasted barely two years before the Encilhamento collapsed, taking several of the newly chartered banks with it.
