The Banco do Brazil's 1890 reissue program came directly out of the Encilhamento — the speculative financial frenzy that followed the abolition of slavery and the proclamation of the Republic in 1889, during which the provisional government dramatically expanded money supply authorizations to multiple issuing banks simultaneously. The Banco do Brazil was one of several institutions scrambling to put notes into circulation fast enough to meet demand, which is why ABNC-printed plates from earlier series were pressed back into service rather than commissioning entirely new designs.
The S-prefix Pick designation flags this as a private bank issue rather than a state-guaranteed emission — a distinction that mattered considerably to creditors at the time, given how quickly several contemporaneous institutions collapsed under the Encilhamento's aftermath.
