Obverse description Printed in black and blue using intaglio and lithographic techniques, the obverse bears an oval medallion at left enclosing a figure of Saint Sebastian and an allegorical female figure of Justice at right; a central upper vignette presents a steam locomotive drawing multiple carriages in motion. The printed signature of Antônio Arnaldo Vieira da Costa appears on the note, issued under the authority of Decree No. 253 of 8 March 1890.

Reverse description Printed entirely in dark blue intaglio, the reverse is dominated by a dense engine-turned guilloche pattern filling the entire field, with two vertically aligned oval lathe-work medallions at centre. The denomination numeral "100" appears in large bold type within ornate cartouches at left and right, flanking the centred bank name, with the American Bank Note Company imprint in small type along the lower margin.
