Mozambique's 1994 coinage came just two years after the Rome General Peace Accords ended a sixteen-year civil war between FRELIMO and RENAMO that had devastated the country's economy and infrastructure. The Banco de Moçambique's shift to nickel clad steel for this denomination reflected the post-war fiscal reality — a nation rebuilding from near-total collapse had little appetite for more expensive alloys.
