Estonia's currency system in the early 1920s was built almost entirely on American printing contracts. Eesti Pank turned to the American Bank Note Company for much of its foundational issue series, a practical decision for a state that had only formally declared independence in 1918 and lacked domestic printing infrastructure capable of producing secure banknotes at scale.
The 100 Marka was issued during a period of significant inflationary pressure common across the Baltic region in the aftermath of the First World War and the subsequent wars of independence. The Mark itself had a short lifespan — Estonia replaced it with the Kroon in 1928 at a rate of 100 Marka to 1 Kroon, rendering the entire series obsolete within a decade of issue.
