The Preussische Bank occupied an unusual constitutional position in the early 1870s: it was the dominant note-issuing institution in the new German Empire but had not yet become the Reichsbank, a transition that would not come until 1876. This note dates from the brief window between German unification and that reorganization, when Prussian banking authority was effectively functioning as a de facto central bank for the empire while remaining technically a state institution.
The 1876 Reichsbank Law converted the Preussische Bank directly into the new imperial institution, and outstanding notes were recalled and replaced. Survivors from this series are consequently scarce.
