Traunstein's 100 Mark Notgeld from 1919 belongs to the first wave of municipal emergency currency issued across Bavaria in the chaotic months following the armistice and the brief, violent episode of the Bavarian Soviet Republic. Local authorities printed their own notes not merely because Reichsbank currency was scarce, but because public confidence in centrally issued money had collapsed almost entirely.

Printed locally rather than contracted to one of the larger specialist firms, the physical quality is correspondingly modest — thin ink coverage and variable impression pressure are common across the Traunstein issues, and misalignment between color layers turns up with some frequency.
