The Book of Dede Korkut is a collection of twelve Oghuz Turkish epic tales whose oldest manuscript copies, held in Dresden and the Vatican, date to the 15th century — though the oral traditions behind them are considerably older. Azerbaijan and Turkey have long disputed cultural primacy over the text. This coin was issued in 1999, the same year UNESCO marked the tales' 1300th anniversary, a dating that is itself a scholarly convention rather than a documented historical anchor.
