Bül-bül — the stage name of Murtuza Məşədi Rza oğlu Məmmədov — was Azerbaijan's most celebrated classical mugham singer of the 20th century, trained partly in Milan and later appointed to lead the Baku Conservatory. This 2008 gold issue marks the centenary of his birth in 1909. The National Conservatory bearing his name was established in Shusha, the city widely regarded as the cradle of Azerbaijani classical music, a region whose cultural status became sharply contested following the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
