Azerbaijan made its Olympic debut in Atlanta in 1996, shortly after independence, and archery has remained one of the disciplines where Azerbaijani athletes have competed at the international level. The European Games themselves were organized under the European Olympic Committees and drew significant controversy over Azerbaijan's human rights record during the buildup to the event.
