Azerbaijan made its Olympic debut in Atlanta in 1996, shortly after independence, and archery has remained one of the disciplines where Azerbaijani athletes have competed at the international level. This coin was issued as part of a broader series tied to the Baku 2015 European Games — the first edition of that multi-sport event, hosted in Azerbaijan and treated by the government as a major assertion of geopolitical relevance in the post-Soviet space.
The European Games themselves were organized under the European Olympic Committees and drew significant controversy over Azerbaijan's human rights record during the buildup to the event.
