The 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games were held in Ashgabat — the first time the event was hosted in Central Asia. Turkmenistan's government invested an estimated $5 billion in infrastructure for the games, constructing an entirely new Olympic village that remains one of the largest in the world.
