The 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games were held in Ashgabat in September 2017 — the first time Turkmenistan hosted a major multi-sport event and, by most accounts, the most expensive games in AIMAG history. The Turkmen government invested an estimated $5 billion in infrastructure for the occasion, including an Olympic Village that became a ghost complex within months of the closing ceremony.
The Central Bank issued a substantial commemorative program tied to the games. KM#199 is one of several silver pieces in that series.
