BA International — the renamed successor to British American Bank Note Company — printed this series during a period when the Montreal firm was actively expanding its client base among smaller African central banks. Lesotho's currency had only existed since 1980, when the Maloti replaced the South African Rand at par, and the country's monetary arrangements with South Africa through the Common Monetary Area meant the 100 Maloti had to remain credible against a regionally dominant neighbour.

The P#18 signature pairing of Ketso and Maruping places this note within a narrow window of the mid-1990s issue run.
