Obverse description Bare-headed bust of Victor Emmanuel II facing left, with characteristic flowing hair and prominent curled moustache and sideburns, rendered in high relief in the neoclassical style by engraver Giuseppe Ferraris, whose name appears in small lettering below the truncation. The circular legend VITTORIO EMANUELE II runs along the upper periphery, while the date 1872 is placed in the lower field, all within a fine beaded border.

Reverse description The Savoy coat of arms — a silver cross on a field divided into four quarters, framed by an ornate chain of the Order of the Annunciation — occupies the centre of the coin, surmounted by the royal crown. The shield is flanked by two crossed branches of olive and oak tied at the base with a decorative ribbon. The circular legend REGNO D'ITALIA arcs around the upper periphery, the mint mark R appears at lower left, and the denomination L. 100 is inscribed in the lower field, all within a beaded border.
