San Marino's 1973 coinage program coincided with the republic's push to leverage numismatic exports as a serious revenue stream — a strategy that would accelerate dramatically through the late 1970s. This particular issue was part of a themed annual series, a format San Marino adopted partly in response to collector demand and partly to distinguish its output from the Italian lire coins it otherwise closely paralleled in everyday use.
KM#28 was struck at the Rome Mint under the terms of the monetary convention binding San Marino to Italy.
