The 1983 Vatican coinage series fell within the Holy Year proclaimed by John Paul II — Anno Santo — which drew millions of pilgrims to Rome and prompted a dedicated commemorative program across denominations. This piece belongs to that series, its theme drawn directly from the Pope's theology of human dignity developed through his encyclical Laborem Exercens (1981), which argued that stewardship of creation was inseparable from human labor and responsibility.
