San Marino began issuing its own coinage series in 1972 after decades of using Italian lire interchangeably with its own population. The 1974 issues appeared during a period of active numismatic programming by the republic — small mintages sold largely to collectors rather than circulating in any meaningful volume, which explains why most examples survive in essentially unimpaired condition.
