The Cassa Rurale di Tesero is a small cooperative rural credit institution in the Trentino-Alto Adige region, and notes like this one were issued as fiduciary instruments — essentially local scrip — to ease small-denomination shortages during Italy's chronic coin scarcity of the 1970s. The Italian state formally tolerated, then eventually regulated and phased out, these private emission notes through the late 1970s. Hundreds of different casse rurali, tobacconists, and municipalities issued similar paper across the decade.
