Banco Lariano was a regional savings bank based in Como, and these 100 Lire notes belong to a peculiar episode in Italian monetary history: the coin shortage of the 1970s, when small-denomination metal coinage virtually disappeared from circulation due to hoarding and the rising cost of metal. Commercial banks, shops, transit authorities, and even telephone companies stepped in with their own fiduciary substitutes — technically illegal but tolerated by the Banca d'Italia under considerable public pressure.
The Banco Lariano issues were among the more professionally produced of the type, though their validity was strictly local and their legal standing always precarious. The series was formally invalidated once the Italian state introduced plastic token coinage and later the gettone telephone token as circulating currency equivalents.
