Bulgaria entered World War One on the side of the Central Powers in October 1915, and by 1916 the state's financial apparatus was under severe strain from war expenditure. The "Zlato" — gold — designation was nominal. These notes were not redeemable in gold; the suffix was carried over from prewar convention and served increasingly as a legal fiction as the war dragged on.
Printed by the Reichsdruckerei in Berlin, the choice of printer reflects Bulgaria's tight wartime alignment with Germany rather than any domestic capacity. Bulgarian currency production had long relied on foreign presses, but routing it through the German state printing works in the middle of a war was a deliberately political arrangement.
