Issued to mark the quincentenary of Columbus's 1492 landing, this coin was part of a wave of commemoratives produced across Latin America and Spain in 1992 — a year that generated considerable political friction, with indigenous rights groups in several countries actively protesting the celebrations as marking conquest rather than discovery. Honduras, whose territory was reached by Columbus on his fourth voyage in 1502, had its own complicated relationship with the anniversary.
KM#85 was struck in limited quantities for the collector market and saw no meaningful circulation.
