Gjergj Kastrioti — Skënderbeu — held Ottoman expansion into the western Balkans at bay for over two decades following his defection from the Sultan's service in 1443. Despite repeated campaigns by Murad II and later Mehmed II, Albanian resistance under his command never broke. It was only after his death in 1468 that the Ottomans consolidated control over the region, taking the fortress of Krujë a decade later.
KM#105 is part of a long-running Albanian commemorative program that has returned to Skënderbeu repeatedly since the 1960s. The 2018 issue was struck at the Berne mint under contract.
