Issued under Enver Hoxha's government — though Hoxha himself died in April 1985, leaving Ramiz Alia to oversee the state — this piece belongs to a series of gold commemoratives that Albania produced almost exclusively for foreign hard-currency sale. Domestic ownership of gold coin was functionally impossible under the regime; these never circulated inside Albania in any meaningful sense.
Durazzo is the Italian rendering of Durrës, the Adriatic port city that served as a critical transit point during the Italian occupation of 1939–1943.
