| Additional information |
Vasile Alecsandri was one of the towering figures of 19th-century Romanian literary and political life — poet, playwright, diplomat, and a principal architect of Romanian national identity during the unification movement of the 1850s and 1860s. Born in Bacău in what is now Romania, his inclusion on a Moldovan commemorative reflects the shared cultural inheritance that both modern Romania and the Republic of Moldova claim from the pre-partition Moldavian principality. That tension — who owns the legacy of a figure who predates the Soviet-drawn border — is the quiet subtext of this coin's very existence.
