Additional information

The Stavropoleos Church in Bucharest was built in 1724 by the Greek monk Ioanichie Stratonikeas, who served as innkeeper to a nearby han and financed the construction himself — an unusual origin for what became one of the finest surviving examples of Brâncovenesc architecture in the city. It survived the 1838 earthquake badly damaged, was nearly demolished under Ceaușescu's systematization program in the 1980s, and the monastic complex was only fully restored in the early 2000s under the care of a small community of nuns.
