Antim Ivireanul was born in the Caucasus region of Georgia, enslaved as a youth, and eventually brought to the Ottoman court before reaching Wallachia — a trajectory that makes his rise to Metropolitan of Ungrovlachia by 1708 one of the more remarkable careers in Orthodox ecclesiastical history. He established the first printing press in Wallachia capable of producing texts in Romanian, Arabic, and Georgian, and his *Didahii* remain canonical in Romanian homiletic literature. He was deposed by the Phanariots in 1716, strangled, and his body thrown into the Maritsa River on orders from Constantinople.
The Romanian Orthodox Church canonized him in 1992.
