Nicolae Milescu Spătarul spent years as a Moldavian diplomat and scholar before Peter the Great dispatched him to lead a Russian embassy to China in 1675 — one of the earliest formal Muscovite missions to the Qing court. His account of that journey, Descrierea Chinei, became a foundational geographic and ethnographic text circulated across European courts. Moldova's National Bank issued this coin to mark the 375th anniversary of his birth.
