Nicolae Iorga was assassinated in November 1940 by the Iron Guard — the Romanian fascist movement he had publicly opposed — making him one of the most prominent intellectuals murdered during that period of Romanian political violence. His execution came months after the forced abdication of King Carol II, whose own authoritarian government Iorga had served and later criticized. Moldova's decision to issue this coin is notably cross-border in its cultural logic: Iorga was a Romanian historian and statesman, not a Moldovan one, but the shared linguistic and historical heritage makes the tribute coherent within Chișinău's broader commemorative framework.
