Constantin Negruzzi is best remembered for "Alexandru Lăpușneanu," published in 1840 and widely considered the first significant work of Romanian historical prose fiction — a landmark in Moldavian literary history that drew on 16th-century chronicle sources Negruzzi had studied under the direct influence of his friendship with Pushkin, whom he met in Chișinău during the Russian poet's exile there between 1820 and 1823.
